FUGÈRE, H
Swordsman "Pro aris et focis"
Patinated bronze. "H. Fugère" inscribed, "Pro aris et focis" titled on the base. H 84 cm. 21.00 kg.
The figure of a running, half-naked man appears on a terrain plinth, his body captured in an exciting forward movement. He is clad only in sandals and a loincloth. In his left hand he holds the scabbard of the sword, which he draws with his right hand. Possibly the depiction of the Gallo-Celtic prince Vercingetorix. Rubbed patina, possibly residue from the unchased mold on the arms, smaller hole in the scabbard (Ø 2 mm), possibly traces of processing or damage to the right shoulder blade.
If this is Henry Fugère, then: French sculptor and medal engraver (1872 Saint-Mandé - 1944 Paris), studied sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Jules Cavalier, Louis-Ernest Barrias and Denys Puech.
Provenance : Museum estate of Peter Kaus.
