Museum-quality paper love token.
Diameter 16.5 cm.
Historical love token, probably from the early to mid-18th century. A round circle was cut out of paper and decorated with various perforated patterns, then colored in red, yellow, and green. Each of the eight folds provides space for a stanza of a love poem:
1 My darling is a farmer; in him I find my joy and delight
2 When I hear a horse neigh, it makes me think of my sweetheart
3 When I see one riding, my heart fills with joy
4 I think, “How gracefully my sweetheart rides alone!”
[5] Handsome, spirited [?], and alert, my sweetheart rides across his field
6 and he enjoys watching the horses run swiftly.
7 My love, I want to entrust this to you—but to keep it safe for me
8 No one else shall ride it but my dear love alone. Some signs of wear and storage consistent with its age: darker spots, presumably from a different ink that has since faded, and isolated damage to the serrated edge in a few places.
