2022
Large tapestry with a border of foliage.
17th/18th century. With old inventory number “3970.”
Woven in warm tones such as ochre, brown, and green. Backed with nonwoven fabric for stabilization (interlayer) and a coarse cotton backing with small metal grommets. Approx. 252 × 510 cm.
Also known as a tapestry, pictorial tapestry, woven picture, or Gobelin, this wall hanging depicts a rural market scene in a wide landscape. It may be a fragment of a so-called “Teniers tapestry”; inspired by the genre scenes of the painter David Teniers the Younger (1610–1690), such tapestries were produced in Flanders or France. Significant signs of age, defects, and restorations. Based on old photographs, it is evident that the tapestry was trimmed along the lower edge, and the border was subsequently sewn back on by hand.
All lots with a reserve (starting price) of at least €2,000 will be cross-referenced with the Art Loss Register database.
Provenance: Restituted in June 2026 to the heirs of the former chocolate manufacturer Dr. Ernst Hüther (Villa Bergfried, Saalfeld). The tapestry was originally part of the inventory of Villa Bergfried in Saalfeld.
