German painter and graphic artist, 1921 - 1931 master at the State Bauhaus Weimar and Dessau; belongs to the most important artists of the Classical Modernism of the 20th century: "Nature can afford extravagance in everything, the artist must be economical to the last. Nature is eloquent to the point of being obscure, the artist is neatly discreet. - If my work sometimes gives a primitive impression, this primitiveness is explained by my discipline of reducing it to a few levels. It is only parsimony, that is, the last professional insight, the opposite of real primitiveness." (Quote: Paul Klee, www.kunstzitate.net).
