German painter, graphic artist and sculptor, most important representative of Expressionism. He studied in Dresden and is a co-founder of the artist group "Brücke" and took part in the Berlin New Secession and Free Secession, but also exhibited with the Blue Rider. In the 3rd Reich his art was classified as "degenerate" and shown in the exhibition of the same name in Munich.
