The theme of merrymaking became exceedingly popular in 17th-century Dutch painting. The goings-on of the lower classes were depicted in terms of idealized sentimentality, and all stages of revelry were humorously portrayed. The Netherlands became a huge "art factory". Every year 70,000 pictures came on the market, and about 700 painters and their pupils painted an average of 100 pictures each, of which hardly ten per cent are preserved today. * Partner auction Bergmann.
