Bentwood is bent under steam by a process developed by Michael Thonet around 1830. After the privilege granted in 1856 to "manufacture furniture from solid bent wood" was cancelled in 1869, numerous furniture factories sprang up - including J. & J. Kohn, who further developed the process so that edged wood rods could be processed as well.
