Fine, decorative images composed of small colorful stones already exist in the form of mosaics since ancient times. In the 16th century, an exclusive center was established in Florence, which is still famous today for the newly developed pietra dura technique - the so-called Florentine mosaic. Artfully cut precious stones were inlaid into furniture to form extremely elaborate pictorial compositions, resembling finely painted works of art. As a less expensive alternative to the perfectly assembled stone inlays, the scagliola technique was soon developed, imitating marble and precious stones with stucco marble.
