Bentwood chair "Le Corbusier". Fischel, D.G. Fischel Sons.
brand "Fischel Austria". Serial number B9, corresponds to the model number 209 of the company Thonet. Design ca. 1910.
Beech. H ca 75,5 cm, seat height ca 47 cm.
Timeless design classic with seat made of wicker. "Due to its aesthetic reduction in combination with the organic shape, it almost looks like a sculpture." Swiss architect Le Corbusier was enthusiastic about it and used it in many of his buildings, including the Weißenhof estate in Stuttgart in 1927. He acknowledged that this chair "possesses nobility."" (Quote seen on https://www.thonet.de/de/alleprodukte/detail/209). Seat weave added.
Bentwood is bent under steam by a process developed by Michael Thonet around 1830. After the privilege granted in 1856 to "manufacture furniture from solid bent wood" was canceled in 1869, numerous furniture factories were established - including J. & J. Kohn, which further developed the process so that equally angular wooden rods could be processed.
