Guckbox sheet with history depiction of Napoleon's entry into Berlin
Colored copperplate engraving. After 1806.
Printing plate: 30.5 x 38.5 cm. Behind glass : 45 x 55 cm.
History painting depicting the entry of Napoleon Bonaparte and the Grande Armée in Berlin on October 27, 1806, inscribed "Entrée Triomphante se S.M. L'Empereur des Francais et Roi d'Italie dans Berlin le 27 Octobre 1806". Heavily soiled, foxing, slightly rubbed, centerfold.
To create optical illusions, the peep-show box was a popular fairground attraction from the 2nd half of the 18th century, which presented the viewer with graphics deceptively real perspective and shaped the image of the "wide world" with views of landmarks, exotic scenes or theatrical representations.
