Bentwood is bent by a process developed by Michael Thonet around 1830 under steam. After the privilege granted in 1856 to "manufacture furniture from solid bent wood" was canceled in 1869, numerous furniture factories were established - including J. & J. Kohn, which further developed the process so that equally angular wooden rods could be processed.
