The motif became particularly well known as the signet of the Griffelkunst-Vereinigung Hamburg for watermarks, postcards, stationery and stamps.

German lithographer, draughtsman and painter, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1971. In 1993, the German Federal Post Office issued a 100 pfennig commemorative stamp with the motif "Audience" in his honor as part of the "German Painting of the 20th Century" series.
