Red stamp mark "Stobwassersche Fabrik Meyer & C Wried in Braunschweig" and no. "2002" on the base of the box, titled on the lid. 2nd third of the 19th century
Papier-mâché, black lacquer, lacquer painting. 2.5 x 9.5 x 6.5 cm.
Square box with finely painted hip portrait of a young beauty in front of a wide mountain landscape. Signs of age/use. Old restoration to one corner of the lid, 2 hairline cracks and minor flaking to the wall at the hinge, painting crazed, retouches to the hair.
Atala is the tragic heroine in François-René de Chateaubriand's novel from 1801. The baptized young "half-Indian" is caught in a conflict between her love and the vow of chastity.
