French-Swiss painter and internationally renowned modernist sculptor, who became known above all for her Nana figures: "I was completely surprised that they caused such an outrage. I don't think that the Nanas are my best works, but I did hit the zeitgeist with them. Feminism was just emerging, and even though I was never officially in the women's movement, I am a feminist through and through. That has always been a strong driving force in my life. And if you look at my generation, I am perhaps the artist who built the biggest sculptures. I'm crazy about size, I have delusions of grandeur - but a female one, that's something else."
