2 Westerwald roller jugs with ornate floral pattern and chequerboard decoration.

Grey, salt-glazed stoneware with incised and stamped decoration, cobalt blue painting, partly dotted decoration. H 22 and 23.5 cm.
Cylinder jug with tapering handle, decorated with flowers, leaves and tendrils, gadrooned pewter lid with ball finial, crowned engraving and inscription "JM Knabe", dated "1783". Slender jug with smooth ear handle and chequered pattern, pewter lid with ball pusher, indistinctly engraved "JKM(?)" and punched. Signs of age and wear, some defects, 1 jug cracked.
The Westerwald stoneware offered in this auction was collected by Albrecht von der Gabelentz (1873-1933), chamberlain at the ducal court in Altenburg. He was appointed director of the Lindenau Museum in 1912. After the duke abdicated in 1918, Albrecht von der Gabelentz also took over the management of the palace museum on a voluntary basis. The collection was continued by his son Georg (1906-1954).
Provenance : From Thuringian aristocratic property. Restitution property with inventory number of the Altenburg Residential Palace, formerly part of the von der Gabelentz family collection at Poschwitz Castle.
