Back and sides of figured maple, split spruce top, ebonized wood. Body 35.5 cm. Bows 71 and 72 cm respectively.
Violin with unsplit and ribbed back. Enclosed chinrest and fine tuner. Old glued cracks to the top, scratches to the top and back varnish, 1 string peg and bridge missing. 1 bow minimally warped and with defective winding, 1 bow with missing thumb leather, winding and frog eye. Defective case.
J. B. Schweitzer was one of the best violin makers of the Viennese school. He was a pupil of Franz Geissenhof and began making violins around 1812. In 1825 he moved to Budapest: Schweitzer followed various models, sometimes Stradivari or Amati.
