Classical demi-lune transforming table. Friedrich Gottlob Hoffmann.
Circa 1790. "No. 5, A round graceful table with threefold alterations". HOFFMANN, Friedrich Gottlob (1741-1806)
Mahogany and fruitwood, veneered and stained, maple marquetry and thread inlays, partly ebonized. H 77.5 cm, Ø 75 cm.
Semicircular console table with 3 hinged top panels and high frame compartment with black and white decorative frieze, on 4 tapered legs. Swivel support leg with 2 adjustable top supports as a storage aid for the hinged tops. Round playing surfaces with 1x chessboard marquetry and 1x green felt cover, 1x green felt cover on the semi-circular hinged lid above the frame compartment. Brass hinges. Originally lockable, here without lock and key. Restored, with additions and probably slight alterations, partial veneer defects.
The Leipzig Electoral Saxon court cabinetmaker Friedrich Gottlob Hoffmann (1741-1806) was considered one of the most important furniture makers of early classicism in Germany alongside Abraham and David Roentgen. His "multifunctional furniture" is characterized by astonishing versatility in design and material. In 1789, he published the world's first furniture catalog, in which this table is also depicted All lots with a limit (starting price) of at least €1,500 are checked against the Art Loss Register database.
