Rare monumental figure: Skunk. Aelteste Volkstedter.
Blue stamp, 1921/1922, marked "HM 1921". Design: 1921. MEISEL, Hugo(1887 Lichte - 1966 Rudolstadt)
White. H 80 cm. 17.2 kg.
Large sculpture of an expressive and imaginative skunk on a high natural plinth. 1 (production-related?) abrasion on the back, minimal ash marks in places.
The large sculpture of the skunk is part of a group of sixteen animal figures that Hugo Meisel created together with Arthur Storch for the "Porzellan-Palais" on the occasion of the Leipzig Spring Fair. Other figures in this group, which served to decorate the "Porzellan-Palais", included depictions of a monkey, cockerel, drake, fish, pheasant, eagle, lynx, two dragon figures and a 260 cm high fountain with a stag crowning it. With their monumental animal figurines, Storch and Meisel went down in the history of porcelain production, as the production of such large figurines required special experience and technical knowledge. This, as well as the small edition of the figurines (probably no more than ten molds per model), make them objects of porcelain art that are coveted by collectors worldwide.
