Iserlohn tobacco tin Kauffahrtei.
Lid marked "Giese". Circa 1760. GIESE, Johann Heinrich (1716 - 1761)
Bottom and lid embossed sheet copper, sheet brass rim. 3 x 15 x 4.5 cm.
On the hinged lid several cartouches with coats of arms, flanked by allegories of the continents Asia, America, Africa and Europe as well as a Dutch inscription praising trade and seafaring. On the base a merchant scene with Dutch inscription and rocaille and floral frame. Small hole in the wall at the back, small missing part of the wall not visible from the outside, some stronger signs of age/use.
Johann Heinrich Giese was an engraver and chaser in Iserlohn. He was one of the first to use the embossing technique with steel dies.
