Mercy. 12, 257 pages with some illustrations by the author, in red cloth binding, 18 x 13 cm. Bookplate: "Robert Ernest Cowan" and University of California. Probably professionally rebound using the old binding. (Probably published in an edition of 500 copies). The author visited the city, which was still under construction, in 1876. The description of the advantages of the area, with regard to climate, flora and fauna, the local population, including Indians, Chinese and their economic activities such as agriculture, hunting, fishing, mining, transportation, can also be seen as a handbook for emigrants and encouragement to settle in California against the background of the wave of European emigration. /
