Johann Georg Hamann (* August 27, 1730 in Königsberg, East Prussia; † June 21, 1788 in Münster) was a German philosopher and writer. He was decisively influenced by a Christian revival experience. Hamann took Socratic ignorance as his starting point and interpreted this as a plea for faith. A higher unity could not be grasped by the separating mind. He criticized the Enlightenment and emphasized that reason could not exist before language and history. According to Hamann, the ability to think is based on language. He is considered a pioneer of the Sturm und Drang movement. Goethe called him one of the brightest minds of his time. (wikipedia).
