Georgi, Johann Gottlieb: geographer, chemist, * 31.12.1729 Gut Wachholzhagen Kreis Greifenberg (Pomerania), † 27.10. (old style dating) 1802 St. Petersburg. (Protestant) ... In 1772 G. was assigned to the Pallas expedition, which took him through large parts of central Siberia. He was particularly interested in Lake Baikal, and his description and a map he drew of the area remained influential for decades. After returning to St. Petersburg, G. recorded the results of his research in extensive and precise travel reports. ... to have opened up large parts of the Russian Empire to geographical science for the first time through his excellent descriptions of the region, in which ethnological, economic and vegetation-geographical observations are also treated in detail and reliably|.(NDB 6/1964).
