Historical hand fan with romantic scene.
Circa 1785-1790.
Painting on silk, sequins, silver threads, bone(?). The fan 52.5 x 27.5 cm, the frame 58.5 x 34.5 cm. 1.7 kg (including framing).
Folding fan with elaborately open-worked rods with partial gold and silver decoration. Two lovers dressed in the latest contemporary fashion are depicted on the fan leaf in an idealized park landscape with ornamental buildings: a probably younger couple leaning against each other is looking or pointing in the direction of a second, standing couple with a small boy, whose arms are stretching out towards the flowers that the gentleman is handing to the lady. Surrounding this scene on the left and right are trompe-l'œil-like depictions of love allegories in the early classicist style, surrounded by sequins and silver thread embroidery. In a display frame. Significant signs of age. Fragile, therefore with various modern backings throughout on the reverse. 2 bars with unrestored cracks, others with restored cracks. The silver and gold staffage with traces of oxidation and losses. The silk fabric partly broken along the fold lines, the spike missing. Mounting loose in the box.
Enclosed an older sales invoice. Certificate & EU trade license available.
