114th | SPRING AUCTION   –   25 | 26 | 27 | 28 February 2026

621
C. P. Stirn's photographic camera.
From 1886, probably until 1888. CARL PAUL UND RUDOLF STIRN,
Chrome-plated brass. Diameter 14.0 cm. 0.55 kg.
Probably type 1. So-called "secret camera" or "buttonhole camera": a flat camera that made it possible to covertly expose a total of 6 rotating, round glass plates approx. 4.0 cm wide. Below with pull mechanism for the shutter release. The shutter release cord is missing, inside probably with losses.
With engraved factory number: 4667.Rudolf Stirn took over the production of the "Concealed Vest Camera" patent acquired by his New York-based brother Carl Peter, which Carl Peter Stirn registered in his name with the Imperial Patent Office in 1887. Between 1886 and 1888, around 15,000 cameras are said to have been manufactured and sold; the low serial number indicates that the camera was probably produced during this period.
