Alexander Gerbig was a German painter and graphic artist. in 1900, he began studying at the Dresden School of Arts and Crafts and worked as a decorative painter on the side. He encouraged his friend Max Pechstein to do the same. Both eventually continued their studies at the Dresden Academy of Art. They also lived together during this time. Gerbig studied there under R. Müller, Zwintscher and Kuehl and was awarded the Villa Romana Prize in 1913 as well as a one-year scholarship from the city of Florence. Throughout his life, he and Pechstein maintained close correspondence and met regularly.
