Provenance : stamped on binding: "Ex Bibliotheca Bünauina". - - "The doctor of law Heinrich Graf von Bünau (1697-1762) was first in the service of the Electorate of Saxony in Dresden, ... in Eisleben and from 1741 in imperial service. After the death of Charles VII, he retired to his castle in Nöthnitz in 1745 and devoted himself increasingly to historical research alongside his possessions. To this end, he made use of the book collection he had amassed since around 1720, which was initially housed in his Dresden residences before he moved it to Nöthnitz in 1740. The "Bibliotheca Bunaviana" is considered to be one of the largest and most important private and scholarly libraries of the Enlightenment period, with around 42,000 volumes. When Bünau went to Thuringia in 1751 to take up a position as governor of Saxony-Weimar and to serve as chief minister of the duchy from 1755 to 1759, he took a number of books with him to the estate as the basis of a reference library."
