VILLANIS, Emmanuel (1858 Lille - 1914 Paris)
Large bust "Lucretia"
Bronze, polychrome patina. inscribed "E. Villanis", foundry mark "Societe des Bronzes de Paris", titled on the base. H 70 cm. 26.80 kg.
The bust of a young woman with pinned-up hair and tiara on the titled base. It is probably a depiction of Lucretia, the wife of a Tarquinian during the reign of Tarquinius Superbus in the 6th century B.C. She was coveted by Sextus because of her beauty and elegant lifestyle. In the absence of her husband, Sextus gained access to her chambers and dishonored her. Although she was found innocent by her husband and father, to whom she had reported the event, she killed herself so that no truly unfaithful woman could refer to her in future and get away with it. Minimal signs of age and wear, rubbed patina.
Emmanuel Villanis: French sculptor, known for his female figures and busts.
Provenance : Museum estate of Peter Kaus.
