PETRILLI, Aristide (1868 Tivoli - 1930?)
Signed large figure: "Sappho"
White marble, partly painted in color. inscribed "Prof. Petrilli Firenze" and titled "égo dè mòna kateúdo - Sappho". H 78.5 cm. 29.10 kg.
A young woman in a long robe with meandering borders stands on a square plinth. She wears a laurel wreath in her hair and rests a lyre on her hip with her left hand. The inscription on the plinth with the translated words "But I sleep alone" refers to Sappho's so-called moon fragment from around 600 BC, which is often interpreted as a symbol of lovesickness and transience. Minor chips, the frame partly rubbed, the little finger of the left hand possibly broken and glued, the base chipped.
Aristide Petrilli: Italian sculptor, studied in Florence at the Art Institute and then at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze, worked with Raffaello Romanelli, specialized in romanticized figures of classical and historical themes, often using coloured marble, bronze or gilded accents.
Provenance : Museum estate of Peter Kaus.
