PAJOU,
Tambourine player with faun and putto
Terracotta, dark greyish-brown. inscribed "Pajou f. 1774". H 55.5 cm. 10.75 kg.
An almost nude nymph with a tambourine stands on a round plinth with vine-covered rocks. Her gaze wanders downwards to a small faun boy who is reaching for her, while her right hand is protectively placed around a putto who is sitting next to her on the rock and holding fruit. Signs of age and wear, minor chipping on the plinth, coating partly rubbed, two fingers missing on the faun's right hand (gray coating not damaged, however).
If this is Augustin Pajou, then: French sculptor (1730 Paris - 1809 ibid.), from the age of 14 he attended the Royal Academy, where he was a pupil of the sculptor and sculptor Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne, spent several years studying in Rome and Italy, was in the favor of the king and Madame du Barry.
Provenance : Museum estate of Peter Kaus.
