"Martha"
Drypoint on handmade paper. Signed and dated in pencil in the lower right corner (19)24.
46.5 x 28.5 cm. Framed & under glass: 71.5 x 51.5 cm.
Portrait of his wife Martha Dix (known as “Mutzli,” 1895–1985) in right-side profile. The portrait is executed entirely in the style of the “Golden Twenties,” she is depicted in profile with a precisely cut bob; her eyes are strongly defined by black makeup, and her lips stand out in relief from the profile thanks to the very bold etching. With this etching, Dix demonstrates how skillfully he can apply a technique—which was already several centuries old at the time—to New Objectivity, making the print an expressive example of the etching of that era. Slightly discolored, with a light halo around the edges.
Prominent German painter and printmaker, professor in Dresden, a leading representative of New Objectivity alongside Max Beckmann and George Grosz; his work was defamed as “degenerate” during the Nazi dictatorship.
Bibliography: likely Karsch 123b.
