Art Nouveau terracotta large sculpture "Pythia".
Very indistinctly signed relief mark GS 13 Sculpture, 1900-1920, with the addition "Reproduction Reservée", ca. 1895-1922. ca. 1900. Signed "Schörk" on the base. Design: Hans SCHOERK (1849-1899).
Light body, matt color and gold decoration. H. approx. 92.5 x 39 x 38.5 cm.
Large wall relief sculpture, a lady with long hair, headdress and flowing dress sitting on a bench in front of a vegetal background, her hands pointing to her chest, titled "Pythia" in Greek on the base, the upper end inscribed in Greek "Gnothi seauton" (Know thyself.). Frequently quoted inscription on the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, here referring to Pythia, the seer of the Oracle of Delphi. The motto is attributed to the god Apollo in ancient Greek thought. Light glaze rubbing.
