Gouache on vellum. Signed. Dated: 1723.
28 x 34 cm. Framed & behind glass : 46 x 52 cm.
Very finely painted scene after Peter Paul Rubens (1577 Siegen - 1640 Antwerp), the original painting, oil on canvas, 194 x 200 cm, hangs in the Siegerland Museum in Siegen. The Roman author Valerius Maximus (1st half of the 1st century) handed down the story: old Cimon was condemned to die of starvation in prison, only his daughter Pero was allowed to enter daily, she gave her breast to her father and saved him from starvation, when it became known, old Cimon was pardoned for this impressive deed. Collection stamp of John Percy on the reverse of the vellum. Passepartout, glazed narrow gold frame with wooden backing, old London adhesive label on the back: Thomas Agnew and Sons Galleries.
* John Percy, 1817 Nottingham - 1889 London, Dr.med., physician, chemist, metallurgist, 1847 Fellow of the Royal Society, member of the Athenaeum Club and the Garrick Club, 1851 Fellow of the Geological Society. His collection of 1500 watercolor gouache drawings (by about 700 different artists) was auctioned at Christie's in London in 1890, the manuscript catalog of the watercolor gouache drawings was acquired by the British Museum. * Lens, miniaturist, painter, draughtsman, copyist, etcher, studied at the academy founded by Godfrey Kneller in 1711, royal miniaturist to George I in 1720, later also to George II, member of the Rose and Crown Club, the best English miniaturist of his time.
