Antique brooch with glass paste.
Hallmarked 333 yellow gold. Max. approx. 31.82 x 16.24 mm. 7.0 g.
Historic small brooch, a so-called fichu pin, probably English, circa 1805–20, in the shape of an eye with an entourage setting of seed beads running along its contour, surrounding a violet glass paste. On the back, it has a simple hook clasp. The clasp shows signs of repair.
A very faint, amateurish hand engraving is barely legible on the back: Lucy?
Fichu pins are small brooches that were used to attach the scarves (fichus, often triangular or foldable into a triangle)—which, according to the dress conventions of the time, were meant to cover the décolletage during the day—to one’s clothing. Fichu pins were frequently given as friendship gifts, especially in the English-speaking world.
