51/52 cards. Manufacturer: F. A. Lattmann (Goslar). Ace of Hearts with Hamburg tax stamp. French deck. Museum-quality whist playing cards depicting the Crimean War, circa 1862. The face cards depict rulers, queens, and military figures of the time, such as Emperor Franz Joseph I, Tsar Alexander II, Abdul-Aziz, Garibaldi, Omer Pasha, Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, Queen Isabella of Spain, and others. The Crimean War (1853–1856) is regarded, according to modern understanding, as the first industrialized war of position. Under the pretext of religious tensions in the region, the war was fought over the territorial and economic power interests of the participating European great powers, which ultimately shook the political system of Europe established at the Congress of Vienna in 1815. The King of Diamonds is missing; five number cards have different backs.
