Oval salon playing cards from Leipzig.
Circa 1880.
Playing cards with gold edging, lithography. 10.3 x 6.8 cm. 66 g.
36 cards, manufacturer: Friedrich Günthel, Leipzig. These salon playing cards were published by Alexander Twietmeyer in Leipzig. The names of both manufacturers are listed on the back of the cards. The advantages of the oval shape are said to be “convenient shuffling and handling, as well as easy sorting of the cards.” The designs were created “while searching for a replacement for the currently used, sometimes rather unattractive designs.” The artist Fedor Flinzer (1842–1911) “went back to the origins of the cards.” They depict:
Acorns—Peasants: hunters, cattle ranchers, farmers.
Green (Leaf) – Artists: musicians, painters, poets.
Red (Heart) – Scholars: lawyers, doctors, teachers.
Bells – Townspeople: soldiers, artisans, shopkeepers.
The cards shown feature German color symbols.
The Heart of Clubs bears a late tax stamp (circa 1925).
