German painter, graphic artist, and museum director; studied in Weimar under Klemm. During the Third Reich, his art was classified as “degenerate.” In 1951, he was director of the State Museums in Gotha; from 1954 onward, he served as director of the East Asian Collection at the State Museums in Berlin.
