Museum-Quality Tarot Cards.
Woodcut, colored. 11.8 x 6.0 cm. 167.0 g.
A museum-quality, complete deck of tarot cards in a historic slipcase, dated and inscribed: - The Two of Coins with a banner reading Fait par Jaque Rochias Fils a Neuchatel (Printer: Jacques Rochias Fils in Neuchâtel, Switzerland) - Ace of Cups and the Chariot, bearing the inscription Grave par J P PE and the initials JP (Jean-Pierre Proche?, woodcutter) - The Four of Coins, featuring the year 1782 (the year the woodcuts were designed) and the coat of arms of Neuchâtel . Minimal signs of wear on the card corners, consistent with their age; the slipcase does not fit perfectly and also shows age-related signs of wear.
The Swiss Rochias family produced playing cards over several generations. The family’s widespread presence and the scarcity of sources make precise dating quite difficult; however, it can be assumed that they were produced between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. An incomplete set of these tarot cards is held in the British Museum’s collection under inventory number 1992,1212.46.1-60.
