GERBIG, Alexander(1878 Suhl - 1948)

Alexander Gerbig was a German painter and graphic artist. In 1900, he began studying at the Dresden School of Applied Arts and worked part-time as a decorative painter. He encouraged his friend Max Pechstein to do the same. Both eventually continued their studies at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. During this time, they also lived together. Gerbig studied there under R. Müller, Zwintscher, and Kuehl and received the Villa Romana Prize in 1913, as well as an annual scholarship from the City of Florence. Throughout their lives, he and Pechstein maintained close correspondence and met regularly.
