2 chipboard boxes from the Napoleonic Girls' School in Château d'Écouen.
45.5 x 25.8 x 20.0 and 45.9 x 26.4 x 21.5 cm. Total weight: 2.75 kg.
2 chipboard boxes, each containing remnants of wax seals and inscriptions in ink, formerly owned by a Madame Guibourt, Dame de la Maison Impériale (one of the chipboard boxes bears the corresponding designation and the addition a Ecouen) during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769–1821).
In 1806, Napoleon ceded the Château d’Écouen, north of Paris, to the Legion of Honor to establish a school there for the female descendants of recipients of this honorary distinction. The Maison d’éducation de la Légion d’honneur was headed by Henriette Campan (1752–1822), the former chief lady-in-waiting to Queen Marie Antoinette. The educational goals focused less on a basic academic education and more on preparing the girls for a future life as housewives and wives, equipping them with the necessary skills in household management. The title Dame de la Maison Impériale indicates that the aforementioned Madame Guibourt was a teacher at the educational institution that operated until 1814 on the grounds of the Château d’Écouen.
The second chipboard box with the faded inscription: To Madame [...] on Rue St. Christophe, [...] in Paris. Une Boite de 3 [...]eltes, based on the inscription, originally likely a container for delivery. One of the chipboard boxes has damage along the inner edge and the edge of the lid; the lid is currently secure.
