Late Biedermeier reversible brooch.
Tested 333 yellow gold. 50.83 x 43.05 mm. 14.0 g.
Brooch from the Biedermeier period featuring an oval display compartment that allows keepsakes to be placed behind glass on both sides of the brooch, enabling the display side to be changed at will. The glass on the side that was likely used more frequently is slightly thicker and concave. Behind it is a braid of reddish-brown hair; the rear compartment contains a coarse black fabric without any insert. The back features a simple hook clasp. Overall, it shows signs of wear and use consistent with its age: a chip in the ornate outer frame (approx. 2.79 mm), traces of a previous repair, and a few dents on the frame of the rotating centerpiece.
Jewelry with hair inlays was a popular gift of friendship, especially in the 19th century, and was not, as is often assumed, made exclusively as mourning jewelry.
