Mantel clock with Urania figure. The movement may be by B & H Paris(?).
France. Second half of the 19th century.
Unfinished clock movement with a count wheel striking mechanism. Manufacturer’s stamp on the movement: JAPY FRERES & CIE.
45.0 x 45.0 x 20.0 cm (measured with the plastic mantelpiece), the clock itself measures 29.0 x 39.0 x 14.0 cm. Weight of the clock: 5.5; weight of the sculpted pediment: 2.0 kg.
Mantel clock with an alabaster base, atop which stands a gilded figure, presumably the muse Urania, seated and leaning against the clock, holding a telescope, gears, and a hammer. The enamel dial features a minute track and Roman numerals—hands: Breguet hands. The dial also bears faded, no longer legible manufacturer’s markings . Tested briefly and found to be in working order. Overall, shows slight signs of age and wear; in particular, the gilding is noticeably worn in places, and the alabaster base has some small chips, especially on the back.
