"Hortus Alfelto Jersbecensis in Holsatia"...
Copper engraving.
50 x 67 cm. Framed & under glass : 63 x 78 cm.
The Jersbek Baroque Garden in Schleswig-Holstein, drawn by E.G. Sonnin, engraved by C. Fritzsch, 1747. With a small depiction of Wulksfelde in the cartouche (today an organic farm just outside Hamburg).
"The Jersbek estate park was laid out around 1726–1740. The patron was Bendix von Ahlefeld (1678–1757), who had married the only daughter of the Jersbek estate owner, Jasper von Buchwaldt, in 1704. To this day, it remains unknown who designed the garden. A significant portion of the garden can be attributed to the patron himself, who was a lover of the diverse fine arts and financed the Hamburg Opera from 1723 to 1726. Also worth mentioning is Jacob Fabris, who had been a theater painter at the opera since 1724.
The well-known copperplate engraving from 1747 ... At its center is the new, significantly enlarged Baroque garden, which was already widely famous throughout Germany at that time and was the destination of many high-ranking visitors.
In the finest French style, the parterre, bosquet, and woodland section follow one another along a grand central axis, framed and connected by four- and two-row avenues. The parterre consists of two central water basins and colorful “broderies”—that is, flower beds edged with boxwood hedges and laid out with colored stones, as well as accompanying flower borders, such as those once created by the royal French court gardener André le Nôtre at Versailles.” https://www.jersbeker-park.de/index.php/historisches.
