FAURE, Amandus(1874 Hamburg – 1931 Stuttgart)
Constantinople by Night
Oil on canvas. Signed lower right.
39 x 57.5 cm.
Faure frequently depicts Oriental themes in his works, particularly in his genre paintings. A distinctive feature is his nocturnal cityscapes like this one, which are characterized above all by their atmospheric lighting. The painting was exhibited at the Württembergischer Kunstverein in Stuttgart (deposit label on the back). Slight signs of aging.
A painter in Stuttgart and a student of Ludwig Herterich, Leopold von Kalckreuth, and Carlos Grethe, he ranks alongside the artists Otto von Faber du Faur and Hermann Pleuer as one of the leading representatives of a new generation of Swabian painters turning toward Impressionism.
Bibliography: Thieme/Becker.
