Sideboard plate from the "Damascus Service" for Emperor Wilhelm II.. KPM Berlin.
Scepter mark, red imperial orb, and owner’s mark of Wilhelm II; year mark 1912.
Fine painting in purple, green, and gold. Ø 30 cm.
Smooth form. Stylized decoration based on the Chinese famille rose model: on the flag, a border of lotus petals with chrysanthemum blossoms in three oval, multi-lobed medallions.
The Damascus service was likely inspired by a famille rose bowl that Emperor Wilhelm II received as a gift during a trip to the Orient in 1898. The service is one of the last and arguably most opulent sets produced by the Berlin manufactory for Emperor Wilhelm II.
