Game Board "Il Piacevole e Nuovo Giuoco Novamente Trovato Detto Pela il Chiu".
Woodcut, partially hand-colored. 54.5 x 42.5 cm.
Historical game board for a 16th-century Italian dice game played with three dice, featuring depictions of owls, as well as characters from the Commedia dell’Arte and street vendors. Due to its popularity, the game board continued to be reproduced well into the 18th century. The present game board is likely one such later reproduction. Slightly soiled, especially at the edges; slight foxing.
Provenance: Stamped on the reverse with the mark of the Josef Knab Collection. Josef Knab (1846–1899), Bavarian theologian and journalist. Between 1894 and 1899, Knab collected approximately 11,500 prints, which were bequeathed to the Diocese of Passau (now the Museum am Dom Passau) after his death. In 1925, the diocese decided to sell parts of the collection to finance a new organ. See Frits Lugt, *Les Marques de collections de Dessins & d'Estampes*, L.1575b.
