Cotton mesh, muslin, nickel silver(?). White: Length 0.85 m, width at bottom 2.28 m, width at top (pleated, with trimmings) 0.64 m Black: Length 2.24 m, width (max., at the bottom) 0.64 m. Total weight 407 g.
2 historical textiles in Assuit style: A technique for decorating primarily net-like fabrics by weaving in wide metal strips, named after the Egyptian city and region of Assiut, which was known as a manufacturing center for these fabrics.
White: Muslin, pleated, edged at the top with a red-and-gold metal braid featuring gold fringes at the ends; likely originally part of a garment?
Black: Net-like scarf with large, elaborate geometric patterns. No holes or missing sections; the white fabric has very isolated mildew stains; the black scarf has a few slightly loose metal thread ends.
Provenance: From the collection of the Egyptologist Hans Conon von der Gabelentz (born October 13, 1807, in Altenburg; died September 3, 1874, in Lemnitz).
