The membership card of the merchant "Ludwik [...]"—surname illegible—has been painted on. Max Slevogt maintained a close connection to the Palatinate throughout his life. Starting in 1914, he lived and worked for much of the year on his estate, the Slevogthof Neukastel near Leinsweiler, which lies directly on the edge of the Palatinate Forest. The natural surroundings are among his most important subjects. Slevogt is still honored today by the Pfälzerwald-Verein e.V. Members of the association regularly hike the official “Slevogtweg,” a themed hiking trail around Leinsweiler that commemorates the artist’s life and work.
German painter, graphic artist, and illustrator; founding member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund (German Artists’ Association) and the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Pfälzer Künstler (Palatinate Artists’ Association); studied at the Munich Academy and the AcadéJulian in Paris; a leading representative of German plein air painting and German Impressionism alongside Liebermann and Corinth.
