Landscape, genre, and still-life painter; watercolorist. Spent his youth in British South Africa as the son of a Dutch consul. Studied at the Academy in Antwerp in 1920. 1922–1927 at the Academy in Munich. Traveled throughout Europe. Member of the Stuttgart Secession and the New Munich Secession. His style was strongly influenced by Vincent van Gogh, whose nephew Balwé was also a friend of his. As an artist, he made a name for himself primarily as a painter of Lake Chiemsee, whose works were characterized above all by their use of color. In addition to Lake Chiemsee, many of his works also depict scenes from his various travels. On the back of a label, the motif is described as “Hottentot Woman on an Autumnal Vineyard Path Above Würzburg”.
