Donkey in a Spring Landscape
Oil on canvas on cardboard. Signed lower left.
15 x 24 cm. Framed & under glass : 39.5 x 48.5 cm (gilded stucco frame).
The artist Nándor Katona (born Nathan Ferdinand Kleinberger) came from a poor Jewish family in Szepesófalu, a small town in present-day Slovakia. He received his artistic training in Budapest, where he came into contact with Impressionist movements at a very early age, which would shape his work during his most productive period. In addition to motifs from France, the Netherlands, and England, his work is characterized by the landscape of the Southern Tatras, a small mountain range in Slovakia. As his success grew, the artist withdrew more and more from social life in Budapest until he died in 1932 in his adopted home in Hungary. Signs of age, in need of minor restoration, frame damaged.
