Standing Archer
Patinated bronze, patinated copper wire, green stone base. Marked "Ferd. Lepke Berlin," foundry mark "Akt: Ges. Gladenbeck Berlin Friedrichshagen." Height: 59 cm / 55 x 31 x 11.5 cm. 5 kg.
Standing female nude with her head turned to the left, holding a bow with a drawn string in her hands. The work, also known as “The Archer,” was created in 1905 and was first presented in 1906 at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition. It is one of the artist’s most successful works; castings in various sizes were produced and offered for sale by the Gladenbeck Art and Sculpture Foundry in Friedrichshagen and the Lauchhammer Art Foundry. Patina partially worn away, bowstring defective, arrow missing, a few scratches, stone pedestal slightly chipped.
Ferdinand Lepcke: German sculptor; studied at the School of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Berlin; attended the Berlin Academy from 1883 to 1890; from 1888, a master student of Fritz Schaper.
Provenance: Peter Kaus’s museum estate.
